Freshwater Fish

Although freshwater only covers three percent of the planet, some scientists believe there are more freshwater fish species than there are saltwater fish species. Unlike the relatively uniform oceans, freshwater environments such as lakes, streams, and rivers can be very diverse, exposing the fish to a variety of environmental factors. In addition, freshwater bodies of water can allow for fish populations to become isolated. When combined, these factors may have lead to the great diversity of freshwater fish.
