Seahorses Return

Newport Aquarium this week welcomed its Lined Seahorses (Hippocampus erectus) back to a renovated display tank in the Bizarre & Beautiful Gallery.

These graceful beauties had been living off-site since October 2011 while their tubular tank was renovated, with design help from the Aquarium’s seahorse specialist, Biologist Keri Siegert.

In the remodeled tank, the seahorses have plenty of space for their unique courting dance. Their mating behavior also includes high frequency “click” sounds that are the focus of research work by University of Cincinnati scientists into the effects of noise pollution on aquatic animal behaviors.
